One household, two different working arrangements

Plenty of households contain one adult with an employer behind them and one without. Salaried and self-employed, staff and contract, full time and part time. The household runs as a single unit while the support sitting behind each person is not the same at all.

That asymmetry is rarely looked at directly, because it is nobody's problem on an ordinary month. It becomes the whole problem on the month one of the two is not there.

Worth establishing before a conversation

  • What each adult contributes financially, as it actually arrives rather than as a headline figure.
  • What each adult does that nobody is paid for, and what replacing it would cost.
  • What already comes with one person's work, and whether the other has anything equivalent.
  • Whether anything in place would end if that particular job did.
  • What the household would be short of if either person, not just the larger earner, were not there.
Why people ask

Why Washington households raise this

01Two different safety nets
One person may have arrangements through work that the other has no version of. Neither knows the detail of the other's, which is ordinary and worth correcting.
02The unpaid half
Care, driving, admin and the running of a household are real and would have to be paid for. They rarely appear in anybody's estimate because they never appear on a statement.
03Tied to a particular job
Anything held through an employer generally ends when that employment does. That is worth knowing before a job changes rather than discovering afterwards.
04Both people, one conversation
This is one of the few subjects where each adult holds half the facts. Consultations are virtual, so both can join from wherever they happen to be.

What the household depends on from each person

Two columns on one page, one per adult. Not a comparison and not a ranking, simply an honest account of what each contributes and what would be missing without it.

Households doing this for the first time are usually surprised by the second column rather than the first. The money is visible and mostly known. The unpaid work is neither, and it is frequently the more expensive to replace.

  • What each person contributes in money, as it actually arrives
  • What each person does that would otherwise have to be paid for
  • What each already has through work, if anything
  • What each would be short of without the other

Where the gaps usually turn out to be

The common finding is not that the household is short of everything. It is that one person is covered for something by their employer and the other is covered for nothing at all, and nobody had ever put the two side by side.

That is a specific gap with a specific size, which makes it a much easier thing to think about than a general sense of being underprepared.

  • Anything that exists for one adult and not the other
  • Anything that would end with a particular job
  • Anything that was arranged before the household looked like this
  • Who is named on each of them, and when that was last read
Guidance

What we can look at

Three general categories of guidance, each with a page of its own.

  • 01

    Life Insurance

Thinking through how the people who depend on you would manage financially.

  • 02

    Income Protection

Planning ahead for a period when household income stops or is reduced.

  • 03

    Funeral Cost Planning

Preparing for funeral and end of life costs so decisions are not left to family.

These are categories of guidance rather than products. Nothing on this page recommends anything.

Verifiable

Washington licensing, and how to check it

Insurance producers in Washington are regulated by the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner. A producer must hold a Washington licence to transact with somebody who lives in Washington, wherever the producer is based.

Arsine is based in Nevada and holds a Washington licence, which is what makes the service available here at all. The number is below and the record is public.

Worth being clear about

What a Washington consultation is, and what it is not

  • 01

A conversation, and nothing more than that

No application is made, nothing is underwritten and no obligation follows. Ending the call having decided nothing is ordinary.

  • 02

Nothing here reviews an employer's benefits

What a particular workplace provides is a question for that employer. This conversation is about what the household depends on and where it is uneven.

  • 03

    There is no Washington office

Consultations are virtual only. No address in any Washington city is claimed, because none exists.

  • 04

Both adults are welcome on the call

It usually goes better with both, because each tends to hold half of what the conversation needs. Neither has to travel to take part.

Questions

Questions from Washington residents

Five that come up from households across the state.

All frequently asked questions

Is Arsine licensed in Washington?

Yes. The Washington WAOIC number is 1377429 and it is published on this site, in the footer and on the About and Contact pages. The Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner holds the record and you can check it without asking anyone here.

One of us is self-employed. Does that change the conversation?

It changes what each person already has behind them rather than what the household needs. The useful step is putting both adults side by side, because a gap that exists for one and not the other is specific enough to actually think about.

Should both of us be on the call?

It usually helps. Each adult tends to know their own arrangements and not the other's, so a conversation with one person present is working from half the facts. Consultations are virtual, so both can join from wherever they are.

Does Arsine have an office in Seattle, Spokane or Tacoma?

No. There is no office in any Washington city and none is claimed. Consultations are virtual only, which is what makes the same conversation available in every part of the state.

How does scheduling work if Arsine is not in Washington?

Washington and Nevada both keep Pacific Time, so a time that works for you works here without any conversion. A confirmation states the time and date agreed.
